Miles of Love is a 501(c)(3) devoted to providing hope, comfort, and financial support to families with children battling congenital heart defects (CHDs). Every challenging journey with CHD is unique. Our goal is to support heart families during their journey and make the miles ahead a little smoother and full of love.
Miles of Love is passionate about raising awareness for CHDs. We strive to provide information that many individuals are not yet knowledgeable about. CHDs are the most prevalent cause of death in infants due to birth defects. Approximately 25% of children born with a complex CHD will not see their 1st birthday. About 40,000 babies are born with CHD each year, making CHDs the most common birth defect. Every 15 minutes, a child is born with CHD. Approximately 25% of children born with CHD will need heart surgery or another medical intervention within their first year of life. Most causes of CHD are still unknown. Individuals living with CHDs will face life-long challenges including issues with growth and eating, developmental delays, increased risk for anxiety disorders, heart failure, and sudden cardiac arrest or stroke.
Through educational posts and resources, Miles of Love hopes to educate those not touched by CHD about the challenges it brings. We are here to spread awareness about the severity of this defect and how it is impacting numerous individuals each year.
Some CHD families will spend an extended amount of time inpatient. Even once a family heads home, there is always a chance they will be back before they expect it. During these stays, a family is bombarded with medical information, stress, anxiety, and fears of the unknown. As Paul and I know, all of a heart family's energy is poured into showing their child unconditional love. While heart family minds are inundated with all of these things, real life still goes on. Heart families will experience burdens both emotionally and financially, and it will rush over them like a wave - often feeling like a tsunami. More times t han not, these families will not feel comfortable reaching out for help.
This is where Miles of Love steps in. It is simple, we are here to help. We are here to take a burden, regardless of the size, off of CHD families while they navigate this difficult journey. We will provide comforting items, encourage families to have hope, and ease financial worries. We know that CHD is a challenging road, we encourage you to help us as we create some Miles of Love.
